That's probably because the world you live in is kinda different than ours!
My zanpakutou, when sealed, looks like your average sword. The tsuba, or the handle part that keeps you from touching the sword, has a flower pattern on it. Once it's unsealed, it straightens out so the blade is really straight and thin and then two prongs develop on both sides of it.
