Well, some powers are only granted to certain blood castes - the lower blood classes tend to have psychic abilities of one variety or another. Tavros could speak to and control animals. Sollux used his psiionics more than I did, and they were different from mine - and while he heard the voices of the soon-to-be-dead, I heard the dead.

Other powers required playing the game, and even more required dying inside the game.
