Megido, you forget that this species is the same one that actually has termed same gender relationships and I guess it's even kind of looked down on. Why wouldn't they gender discriminate on a holiday like this too?

Either way, different countries have different cultures and even languages, unlike ours. So yes, you do end up with different ways to spend the same holiday.
