Well, whenever someone with enough influence in their society decides they want something honored, they tend to make a holiday of it. It assures that people will continue to remember the origin of that holiday. At least until another culture borrows it, lacking the context of the original society that created the holiday in the first place.

With so many cultures generating so many holidays, there winds up being a lot.
