hi again everyone!
so ive learned a bit about valentines day
and in doing so ive found its celebrated differently in different places? :o
and also in some places like japan
theres a corresponding holiday called white day!

so anyway my question today is do you celebrate valentines
and if so how
just out of curiosity
with absolutely no ulterior motive whatsoever

also exactly how many human holidays are there because so far there have been rather a lot of them my goodness
its almost like theres a holiday for every month
and there are at least five ways to celebrate each one
i think i need a chart

You probably do need a chart. I know I need one just to remember all of Japan's. Some of them even move!

I'm trying to make one, but it's hard keeping track since whenever I get one down, people say "oh by the way, guess what's coming up?" and I can barely ever guess! It's sort of fun, though. There's always something happening!

Well, you're right about the whole Valentine's Day and White Day fiasco thing in Japan. I'm actually planning on sending some of the men I've met, as well as some close 'girl friends' some chocolate. Unlike back home, I don't really expect anything in return on the day of White Day though. [You know, many cultural differences and its probably too much of a hassle anyway.]

As for the holidays, I mainly know of the ones in Japan and nationwide like Christmas and New Years. There's...kind of too many to mention, to be honest.

Well, whenever someone with enough influence in their society decides they want something honored, they tend to make a holiday of it. It assures that people will continue to remember the origin of that holiday. At least until another culture borrows it, lacking the context of the original society that created the holiday in the first place.

With so many cultures generating so many holidays, there winds up being a lot.

Apparently it's traditionally a day where girls give chocolate to boys they like - usually handmade - but it's not sort of a day where you give chocolate to your friends as well as someone you like romantically?

At least, that's what I've been able to gather! In Japan, where apparently the girls give the boys chocolate on Valentines' day, the boys give something white back to them on White day, which is sometime after Valentines' day!

Valentine's Day and White Day are celebrated in Korea too but there's also Black Day in April. Pepero Day popped up a few years ago too.

I do indeed celebrate Valentine's, and mostly I spend time with John and send chocolates or candies to those closest to me. I'd like to spend it with them too, but everyone is usually pretty spread out, so they just have to put up with being given copious amounts of sweets.

Valentine's Day is commonly celebrated in Western countries due to its origin as a festival celebrating the life of a Christian saint, though it seems like it has become a global holiday. It's not particularly surprising, given how over-commercialized it is. I've never been particularly fond of it, honestly--it's always seemed rather frivolous to me.

It and White day are holidays that the chief of our agency like, however. She enjoys many 'cute' things.

nah I don't really celebrate it

unless helping people make chocolate if they ask counts

but usually it's the girls giving chocolate to guys. most because they like them, some because it's some sorta obligation. then a month later guys give stuff to girls. kinda like paying them back? though that's only in japan; heard america doesn't have white day, just valentines and both girls and guys give each other stuff then.

its a human holiday on the 14th of this month
where friends and lovers exchange chocolates and candies!
as well as cards saying happy valentines day :D
at least thats what ive been able to gather!

Oh, that depends entirely on the person celebrating it.
Some people use it as an excuse to be extra romantic with their significant other.
Others take the opportunity to spread some love and affection to their friends.
Sending chocolates and flowers are common gifts to give.
A dozen red roses usually are for romantic couples, while yellow roses are sent to friends.

I know quite a few American holidays you might be interested in learning about.
May Day, Independence Day, Friendship Day, Easter.
Actually, i think the Chinese New Year's is this month.
I believe this year is the year of the Snake.

Usually in school, before everyone is old enough to have boyfriends and girlfriends, everyone gives valentines and treats to all of their classmates. I think it's like letting them know that they're all your friends, though a lot of people give their best friends something else, too.

i never celebrated valentines day before i arrived here because i never really had the chance
really, i didnt have the chance to celebrate any holidays for a long time
i still dont really do much for it... i just give my friends chocolate and make my own valentines for a few of them
as for just how many holidays there are, i am not sure!
youre right about there being a lot, though
a chart to keep track of them really wouldnt be a bad idea
