hi again everyone!
so ive learned a bit about valentines day
and in doing so ive found its celebrated differently in different places? :o
and also in some places like japan
theres a corresponding holiday called white day!

so anyway my question today is do you celebrate valentines
and if so how
just out of curiosity
with absolutely no ulterior motive whatsoever

also exactly how many human holidays are there because so far there have been rather a lot of them my goodness
its almost like theres a holiday for every month
and there are at least five ways to celebrate each one
i think i need a chart

Hiyoko told me about it! Apparently they don't celebrate Valentines in her world. Instead they give out beans? On the third? Because birds rule the world, I think.

That doesn't sound like any holiday I've ever heard of- and I've heard of a lot.

I hadn't heard of it either! I think just the fact that so many people are from so many different worlds means...well, there's enough going on to confuse just about everyone! But I'm working on it.

Well, I guess there are probably a bunch of holidays that you guys have back on Alternia that we've never heard of, huh?

Well- that's something I haven't heard in a while.

Gosh, probably! I mean, we don't as a species have as many holidays as humans seem to, but 12th perigree's eve and things aren't holidays you have. Although there are sort of equivalents!

Really? Why's that?

Haven't really had time to make much in the way of 'friends' the last few years.

Quadrant Appreciation Day is kind of like Valentine's day, and 12th Perigree's Eve seems a bit like Christmas - they're just...much less party and celebration worthy, I suppose? Or rather we're just not that celebratory a species. I'm not sure which is true!

Oh, because of your job?

Quadrant...? What's that? [A pause, an then-] And at least you have something like Christmas. A planet with no holiday for arbitrary gift-giving wouldn't be much fun.

[She's not all too serious about that, though she stops and considers Aradia's question for a moment.]

[Can't really be too nice as a diva and it's so hard Aradia. It's hard and nobody understands.]

Oh, trolls have four types of romance instead of the one that humans have. And I guess not! Although exchanging gifts was a bit rare, all things considered.

Well, you have time now! Although I do know there's some sort of idol show on Sundays...

Four? Geez, how the heck do you keep track of that kind of stuff? --wait, why was giving gifts rare? You guys have some weird aversion to presents or something?

So I do. Guess I should work on that whole 'socializing' thing, huh?

Not really, it's just - well, we all lived pretty far apart? So maybe it was just my experience. But we also didn't celebrate things as much as humans seem to do, you know?

Yep! It usually plays on Sundays, over the gears.

Oh- I got ya. That does put a damper on gift-giving, if nothing else.

Guess that's one more thing to look into. This place sure is a lot more complicated than I remember.

I think that's because there are so many people from so many other worlds - and this isn't just a game! I mean, it's a world. There are people who grew up here, and who have their own lives, which a game might not show.

Guess you've got a point on that one. Well, it sure does make things interesting at least- if nothing's the way I think it's going to be, then I don't know what to expect.

Always did like diving head-first into the unknown.

I've never really had the chance to dive into something so unknown. Exploring my homeland ages ago, maybe, but...well, I always knew what would happen, or what needed to happen, until I came here.

It's nice.

Knew what needed to happen? How's that?

[It sounds pretty weird. And a little boring.]

But yeah- sometimes the best thing is not knowing what's coming next.

I was the Maid of Time. And the spirits of the dead talked to me. So...I was responsible for making sure that what had to happen did, in fact, happen. If it didn't, our timeline would and did become a "doomed" timeline, where we were all fated to die.

'Maid of Time' sounds kind of important on its own- but geez, talking to the dead, too? You're pretty chipper for that kind of girl, aren't you?

...but geez. That sounds like a lot to be responsible for.

Maybe! But I guess I'm just very happy to be alive again. It's nice! And I missed being able to feel things. It was hard to feel things when I was dead - at least, I had feelings, but they weren't the same thing at all.

Okay, you're definitely way more chipper than you should be about 90 percent of that, I'll tell you right now. Are you always so optimistic?

I suppose so? I didn't used to be, but again, I have a new perspective now!

Man, kid- you're something else, you know that? I mean, it's not a bad thing, of course but just...

Well. I'm not easily impressed, but let's just say you're doing a hell of a job.

I think I'll take that as a compliment!
